The Craigslist Killer
The alleged "Craigslist killer" is back in the news again. A Warwick, Rhode Island woman became the victim of an attempted robbery last night after meeting with a potential client in a hotel. She had advertised massage services on Craigslist. Police believe this crime may be linked to the murder of a woman in a Boston hotel two days earlier. Again, the victim is believed to have met the killer through Craigslist.
Authorities have critcized Craigslist in the past for providing criminal avenues. Last month, a Texas sheriff sued Craigslist, saying that the site provided a "safe haven" for prostitutes. Will the law crack on Craigslist to try to prevent these tragedies? These cases could force online classified and social media sites to have to be more careful about what they allow for fear of liability.
Prostitution & Craigslist - Legalizing prostitution has long been a debate in this country. There are no simple answers. Morally, it would be a resounding NO. However, it is a profitable erotic business that does not go away. Tens of millions of dollars are generated in every county of every state in the country and none of it is taxed.
Sure, there are a few ladies who do give a little bit to Uncle Sam but I am sure it is not nearly close to what they have actually made. In comparison to how many ladies advertise on Craigslist every day in the erotic section, an actual murder of a working girl has been rare. I think that if the ladies working knew that this is what would happen it may inspire them to seek other employment.
As it stands now most of the time there is very little punishment given, so what is the incentive to stop? Top of the line ladies can charge $1000 an hour or more, pretty ladies $300-$350 an hour, others $200-$250 an hour. I'm not sure what street walkers charge. My point being, if there is no punishment for the crime, why stop doing it when the gain is so great?
If you knew you were going to get a year mandatory in jail I would think many ladies would think twice about it. This has many sides to it. I don't have all the answers and these are just a few of my thoughts. I do know this, that no matter what a person does there is never a reason that he or she should be murdered and the police should pursue this "craigslist killer" like they would any other which is what they seem to be doing.
Use some common sense when posting on craigslist or responding to products or services on craigslist. If you're willing to engage in risky behavior then you have to accept the consequences. It is idiotic to think that you know strangers to be trustworthy just because you've chatted for some time. This world breeds predators and to think that you can control anyone else is pure fantasy. Be smart!
This website is not affiliated with Craigslist in any way. I personally like craigslist and I use it's services everyday. I do not want the government getting involved in this. I think they have enough to screw up. Protect our borders, create jobs, fix the banking system, take turns walking the obama dog, fight terrorism, fix the housing market, pay back china, and raise taxes. I don't think they need to worry about what people do on Craigslist :)
